目次

Many of the predictions made in the previous edition of just-drinks' Champagne report have come to fruition since publication in 2009. However, who could have predicted the ensuing turmoil to engulf the industry from that time (and continuing to impact today)? Economic downturn, tumbling sales, lowest prices in nearly a decade, austerity measures affecting disposable incomes and levels of consumer spending. Just a few of the issues and challenges facing this troubled drinks sector.

This latest edition provides a global review of the Champagne market. It' s an essential guide to understanding the sector by reviewing the history and events since the previous publication. It considers the various decisions made in response to a worsening crisis, analyses the rationale behind them and looks to a more optimistic future.

Vranken Pommery Monopole managing director Paul Bamberger: “Our response to the crisis was to be in the right position with the right product for the right consumer.”

“In Europe, for instance, Vranken Pommery Monopole has three or four international brands. That means that every one has its own positioning. Heidsieck Monopole was very successful because it was exactly the position that people were looking for - value for money.”

“I definitely think value will be coming back into the market. Champagne consumption is something that is more and more in the habit of consumers, as an aperitif and more and more with a meal. And there is an improvement in the Champagne that we drink.”

Each market is reviewed independently with a summary of highlights and lowlights in performance, how the top Champagne houses have reacted and what the future holds.

Data is provided for Champagne shipments to main markets (volume and value) from 2004 to 2009 and predictions of shipments from 2010 to 2014.

The report also looks at emerging markets, environmental concerns, EU policy and the threat to plans to extend the appellation.
