Abstract

This IDC Health Insights report presents an analysis of IT spending trends and forecasts in the New Zealand healthcare industry in 2009–2013. The report provides a breakdown of the key areas in healthcare IT spending and the critical issues faced by healthcare executives in 2009, as well as the factors that will influence IT investment decisions over the next 12 months. This report also reveals the strong growth opportunities that will occur over the forecast period, particularly for software and IT services vendors.

"Collaboration and integration will be key themes in the New Zealand in 2009, as healthcare providers continue to evolve from a provider to a customer-centric approach. Healthcare will seek IT solutions that will address its pain areas and address the issues presented by the complex environment and ever-changing compliance needs," says Louise Francis, senior market analyst, IDC Health Insights, New Zealand.

Alex Kim, associate research director, IDC Health Insights, Asia/Pacific, also states that "there is a great opportunity in New Zealand. After leading the Executive Healthcare Provider Roundtable in Wellington and meeting with the New Zealand Ministry of Health, DHBs, PHOs, NGOs, and private hospital providers, everyone is ready for a real change. With bold leadership, New Zealand can shift towards a stronger health information exchange and build greater consistency in data to support a national-level EHR initiative that is both sustainable and cost effective."

IDC Health Insights also launched the first annual Asia/Pacific eHealth Executive Survey program and the key provider executives were questioned about their ICT plans and priorities for the year ahead. This 2009 end-user survey was completed in June 2009 and interviewed >280 healthcare providers in eight Asia/Pacific countries, including New Zealand. Alex states, "Next 1–2 years, top strategic business issues for New Zealand, in order of importance, include upgrading technology, improving service, complying with government mandates, and expanding service portfolio."
