Zinc oxide nanopowders find application across a raft of industries where they are used for their anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-corrosion, catalytic, and UV filtering properties. The main application of Nano ZnO at present is as UV-resistant additive in sunscreens. Other applications of Nano ZnO include anti-microbials, conductive thin-films in blue laser diodes, solar cells, and LCDs, protective coatings, capacitors, varistors, photoprinting and electrophotography.

The minimum worldwide tonnage produced in 2011 was 33,400 tons (approximately 2% of worldwide production of 1.4million tons). Nanophase and Umicore produce over 500 tons per year each for the cosmetics industry alone. The average price for the zinc oxide nanopowders has been estimated to be $1,500 per ton.
