Abstract
Large Screen Cinema
The introduction of digital technology to the large screen business with the
development of the IMAX digital system has supercharged large format cinema.
Alongside IMAX, proprietary systems have been introduced by major exhibitors
and China has entered the market with a state-backed system. In just four
years the number of digital large screen theatres is already 50% higher than
the peak of around 400 screens reached by the 40 year-old film-based large
screen industry.
Propelled by consumer enthusiasm for the immersive experience they offer, the
number of large screen theatres could quadruple in the next five years,
creating a boom for equipment suppliers, and adding over $800 million to
global box office.
This report traces the history of the large screen business and examines
current financial returns to paint a picture of a business with the potential
to add 10% to global box office even at current levels of admissions.
