Abstract
Summary
Unified messaging and unified communications have garnered a lot of attention
with promises to improve employee efficiency and enable business processes for
knowledge workers. While this may, ultimately, be the case in the long term,
business users are not currently pounding the desk demanding these
capabilities. In fact, this report shows how technological capabilities have
out-stripped demand or even felt need, to date. In this environment, IT
decision makers must weigh the benefits associated with these capabilities
(specifically, increased efficiencies and the acceleration of business
processes) against the cost and complexities of deployment. Unified messaging
is increasingly prevalent in the work setting and will serve as the initial
step on the unified continuum to true convergence.
This report contains an analysis of the current state of UM and UC from both
industry and end-user perspectives. Vendor profiles and survey results of
business decision makers' current and planned adoption of UM/UC applications
are presented. Also included is an updated analysis of market shares of the US
and worldwide UM and traditional voice messaging markets, along with forecasts
through 2011, which builds upon previous In-Stat research in this area.
