Abstract
Fixed Mobile Convergence, while well addressed in the telecommunications
industry, has not yet permeated significant mindshare among most business
decision makers. This report takes a look at how US businesses are modifying
their voice communications solutions between wireline TDM, wireless, and IP
alternatives. While a single solution is rarely used exclusively any more, the
demand for a single device to tie multiple voice network capabilities together
remains moderate. Also slowing the movement to FMC is the lack of incentive
for major wireless carriers to migrate billable minutes of use on their
networks to IP WANs unless a significant portion of the customer base demands
it.
Current interest in dual mode handset capability, FMC application, twinning of
cellular phones to PBXs, and access to PBX and Centrex feature functions on
cellular phones are also analyzed. A worldwide forecast of business dual mode
Wi-Fi/Cellular handsets and subscribers is also included.
