Abstract

In this report, Business Trend Analysts examines trends in the U.S. marketplace for power, distribution, and specialty transformers, analyzing the market from the manufacturers' level. Products discussed in detail include power; distribution; indoor; miscellaneous special-purpose; instrument; commercial, institutional, and industrial; and other specialty transformers.

The U.S. market for transformers includes power, distribution, and specialty transformers, as well as transformers for electronic applications. The market is heavily impacted by economic conditions, construction activity, and the housing market. It also influenced by the health of several major manufacturing industries. From 1995 2005, U.S. manufacturers' dollar and unit sales of transformers grew at average annual rates of 1.0% and 0.1%, respectively.

In 2006, U.S. manufacturers' sales of transformers should total 563.5 million units valued at $7.7 billion. That year, power, distribution, and specialty transformers should represent 78.5% of the value and 2.9% of the units of U.S. manufacturers' sales transformers. Due to their higher prices, products in this particular segment are not frequently purchased as electronic transformers. Power transformers may cost excess of $1 million per unit. Electronic transformers should account for 21.5% of value and 97.1% of the units of U.S. manufacturers' sales of transformers in 2006.
